Mecca (Makkah Al-Mukarramah) is an inland city located approximately 70 kilometres from Jeddah, meaning all sea cargo for import from India to Mecca arrives first at Jeddah Islamic Port — the largest port on the Red Sea — and is then transported by road to Mecca.

The sea freight transit time from Indian ports to Jeddah Islamic Port is 8 to 12 days, depending on the port of origin. Shipments from Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) and Mumbai Port take 8–10 days, from Mundra it is 9–11 days, and from Chennai approximately 10–12 days. Once goods clear Saudi Customs at Jeddah (under ZATCA — Saudi Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority), the road journey to Mecca takes approximately 1.5 hours (70 km).
