What is the Difference Between Basmati and Jasmine Rice?

Though both Basmati rice and Jasmine rice appear quite similar, there are fundamental differences among these two types of rice. As an example, Basmati rice is primarily rice export from India imported from India and Pakistan whereas Jasmine rice is produced mostly in Thailand. Additionally, Basmati rice has long thin grains that separate easily from each other after being cooked while Jasmine rice has slightly shorter thicker grains that become really moist and sticky when cooked.

The aroma of these two types of rice is very distinct as well. While consuming Basmati rice provides a rich nutty and popcorn-like aroma, the aroma from Jasmine rice is much sweeter and has floral notes. As far as use, Basmati rice is best suited to be paired with Indian style meals such as biryani or pulao whereas Jasmine rice goes extremely well with Thai inspired dishes whether they be curries or stir-fried cuisine.
